As President and CEO of a growing organization in a complex industry, Thomas Maher focuses on people: Practicefirst employees and clients. “You can’t have one without the other, and Practicefirst is successful because we take care of both.” He oversees a diverse and talented team of experienced professionals; whose collective mission is to maximize the value of their clients’ medical practices.

 

Like most successful executives, Mr. Maher’s career path has been long, winding and opportunistic. He earned a BS in Accounting from the University at Buffalo, and became a Certified Public Accountant. He gained valuable experience in the business of healthcare through positions in a CPA firm with healthcare clients and as a Hospital Controller.

 

He eventually moved into Mortgage Banking, rising to Vice President, Portfolio Manager of a large mortgage service provider, administratively responsible for the acquisition and sale of over $9.4 billion of mortgage servicing rights. He also served as Managing General Partner of a consulting group that supported real estate developers’ efforts to build or rehabilitate Affordable Senior Housing projects.

               

In 1996, Mr. Maher seized the opportunity to invest in an established and respected medical billing company, Professional Business Systems, Inc. He dedicated himself to learning the business from the ground up, becoming a Certified Professional Coder in the process. In 2008, Mr. Maher changed the name of the business to Practicefirst Medical Management Solutions, to better reflect the comprehensive nature of its current service offerings.

 

Over the past two decades, Mr. Maher has led Practicefirst's business development efforts, significantly increasing service lines, clients and revenue. With a strong leadership team surrounding him to manage day-to-day operations, Mr. Maher now focuses on enhancing client relationships, strategic opportunities and continued organizational growth.
